Find your headsize

The correct cap size ensures you the best comfort, and you avoid your cap causing headaches or blowing off in the wind. It is essential that you find the cap that suits you well, whether you have a huge head or use a smaller capsize.

How to measure your head
  1. Use a tape measure or string to measure the circumference of your head at its widest point. In most cases, you measure just above the ears.
  2. Take this measure 2-3 times to validate.
  3. Use the largest number you have measured. This is your headsize.
  4. Round up rather than round down. If your head measurement is, for example, 58.6 cm, you should buy the cap in hat size 59.

Your hat size is measured at Wilgart in centimeters, but below you will find a chart of which main measurements you use if your cap is stated in English, French or American hat measurements. Remember there is no guarantee that your hat or cap purchased elsewhere actually measures what it says. It depends on the manufacturer to ensure the correct size.

We make sure that Wilgart’s caps have valid sizes, but some caps sit in a different place on the head than others, and therefore it can happen that you use one size in Baseball caps, but another size in Eighpiece caps or fedora hats.

Changing the size of the cap

It is not always possible to change the size of a cap. Especially if it is to be much larger or much smaller in circumference. Such a modification will almost always give the cap a distinctive appearance, and the repair itself is often difficult and thus costly. If the cap is just going to be one to two sizes smaller, it is usually easier. Changes in the size of a cap are always based on an individual assessment in the workshop. Why has my cap gotten smaller/bigger?

All Wilgart caps come with an edge inlay which ensures that the cap is more dimensionally stable than most other caps you will find on the market.
However, you should expect some change in the size of the cap over time. This is related to the fact that we work with natural fibers, which always change a little. The fibers change character when exposed to the following 3 factors

  • Heat
  • Moisture
  • Activity

Therefore, you can advantageously counteract changes in the size of the cap by adding the same three elements. Typically in the form of Steam (heat and moisture) and then either stretch the cap (expand) or let dry without stretching (shrink). You can expand the cap by wearing it on your own head while it slowly dries, or use one of our hat stretchers.

Typically, the cap always works about 1/2 size down and up, but even this small change in size can be bothersome, and you may have to regularly compensate for changes by stretching or shrinking the cap.
