Back in the day
Some may remember how their grandfather always went to the hatmaker to have his hatband replaced. Others had a friend or relative who was a milliner, and every day I meet many people who have stories about headwear. The truth is that after a turbulent cultural shift in the 1960s, headwear virtually disappeared. But now I see that it’s slowly making a comeback in the wardrobes—and in the minds—of many Danes. Knowledge of hat culture and the craft’s current practice. Unfortunately, much of the knowledge and stories about headwear have been lost, and many Danes are unaware that there are still artisans ensuring the craft’s survival. For us, the craft is alive and well, and we can offer a personalized and distinctive hat—unlike the mass-produced, characterless products that clutter shelves and glove compartments.

Hats Are Becoming a Personal Choice
In the past, people wore hats to blend in with the crowd, but today many wear hats to stand out. Hats and caps are a personal choice, an expression of style and attitude. That’s why I’m seeing a growing interest in headwear culture. Many people ask about the stories and processes behind them, or they look on in amazement when they learn that the sewing machines are set up in the back room and that I actually make the caps myself.
“Wow, you make them yourself?” they say… “Can you really make a living doing that?”

Quality
Over the past several decades, there has been a decline in the variety and quality of caps in particular. As production has shifted to Asia, the traditional craftsmanship of the trade has been compromised. Many people believe that the quality offered by these manufacturers is the only standard available. Even those who take some interest in clothing have lost the ability to tell the difference between the good and the bad. That is why an introduction to and understanding of the art of cap and hat making is essential.

To fight for hat customs
With the book I fight for good hat style and traditional craftsmanship. You could say that I am at war with the prevailing indifference in the use of headgear by Danes. For example, it is not okay to wear a random worn-out sponsor cap that you got 7 years ago during a weekend course at the company. Especially if you already have a sensible view of clothing and quality. – It simply is not okay.

Denmark is fine craftsmanship
The craft trades always have great stories to tell and champion important values—values that are fading from society, even though we all wish they would remain. Values such as thoroughness, knowledge, responsibility, and taking the time to create a quality product. By sharing stories about craftsmanship and the people who live by these values, we have a real chance of ensuring they remain part of our collective identity.
