It’s no secret that Wilgart is growing. The benefits of many returning loyal customers, as well as the trend in society that favors craftsmanship, quality, and honest, locally produced caps, keeps us growing. It puts the needle and thread in motion, so to speak, in our small cap workshop.

This year promises to be the year in Wilgart’s history where we have sewn the most caps in Denmark, up to 600 pieces, and at the same time we have successfully introduced new product groups, including belts, scarves, hats and gloves. Furthermore, Wilgart has managed to attract attention by participating in markets around the country and external collaborations.

Recently, Tomas, who owns the company, and I have been considering whether it’s time to expand the ownership. If the success continues, we will need more key people to develop and build new initiatives. If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, think hats are the best thing in the world, or are cool at sewing, please drop by at any opportunity. We’re taking it slow, and our expectation is that Wilgart will find the right person within the next 2-3 years.

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ve probably heard Silas’ excited story about the book we’re working on. The enthusiasm has now lasted for a total of just over 3½ years, and some of the customers who frequent the store note that they have heard more than once that the book is coming soon. The apparent truth is that we now only need to finalize the cover and get the book printed. I have to admit that going to print is neither quick nor easy. We have given the book all the love and time it deserves.

“A Cap Maker’s Journey”, as the book is called, is about craftsmanship, hat culture and headwear. There are historical accounts and images about the theme, but also contemporary players in an almost forgotten industry. The content is a combination of the author’s own texts and photos mixed with archive images and collaborations with external photographers, artists and journalists. There are poems and stories, but above all photographs.

The book is approximately 350 pages in a relatively large format (28 x 24½ cm) with a myriad of original photos and marvelous details about headwear. It will be published in the spring of 2026 in collaboration with the publisher Frydenlund and will cost 4-500 DKK.

The shirt’s motifs show examples of Bornholm’s cultural history and nature. Among the cultural-historical motifs are the petroglyphs of suns and ships carved into the rocky slopes above Allinge by Bronze Age people. You’ll also find the medieval castle Hammershus, which today stands as a ruin, surrounded by cliffs, sea and forest. King Christian the 5th’s fortifications off Bornholm – Ertholmene – are also represented by the Great Tower on Christiansø and the Little Tower on Frederiksø. You’ll also find the Svaneke Water Tower from 1952, designed by world-famous architect Jørn Utzon.

Among the shirt’s nature motifs, you’ll find the Light Rock, which stands like a marvelous granite pillar in the Baltic Sea at the Shrine. You probably won’t have any trouble spotting the anemones that are sure visitors to the spring forest floor. Not so easy to find the “snake” in the Bornholm paradise: the wood tick. But it’s there!

When guests arrived, it was to enjoy the summer, the sights, the nature – life! And perhaps also the temptations of summer. They could be found in the smokehouses in the form of smoked herring, and they could be found in the hotels, which in the evening had musicians playing music for dancing in the grand ballrooms.

Godâ Skjorter (Bornholm for Aloha Shirts) was founded by Niels Ebdrup in 2018, with a vision to create Hawaiian shirts with local motifs, sewn and sold on Bornholm. Niels’ entrepreneurship took off, and for a number of years the shirts were widely used and loved by the local population on Bornholm. The project subsequently needed new forces, and in 2023 Wilgart signed a transfer contract with Niels Ebdrup and relaunched the Bornholm-produced Hawaiian shirt with a new name and logo. The Bornholmer Shirt will continue to be produced on Bornholm, and we are always looking for new exciting collaborations on motifs and prints for the shirt.

Very often hats are confused with caps and vice versa. I often get to call a hat for a hat, a cap for a cap, but also allow a hat for a cap, and say cap to a hat! Thus reinforcing the cluttered relationship between a living language contrary to the professional terms of the industry. However, when explaining why Wilgart is the last capmaker up North in Scandinavia, then the distinction between hatmakers and capmakers comes sharply worded, just like my master Herr Bullmann used to say it.

We are capmakers, he explains me. Everything we make is from woven materials, cut by a tailor’s scissor and sewn together on a sewing machine. Hatmakers, they work mostly with felt, which is then steamed and pressed into shape. Both categories apply to making headgear, but the artisanship is anything alike.

“Ich bin ein Mützenmacher” Herr Bullmann said to his apprentice, with a severe voice pitch and sincere pride. And from that day, Wilgart understood the distinction.

Danish milliners society

Being a capmaker myself, this divide has proven very handy. First, I get to call myself the last capmaker in the North, which is true since I don’t know anybody else here specialized in cap headgear. In addition, I get to meet with a creative and inspiring little community of hatmakers and milliners in Copenhagen: Danish milliners and hatmakers where the exclusiveness of my craftsmanship gives me a special status from the rest of the group. A position with inbound privileges and drawbacks.

Some of the great milliners in Copenhagen are experimenting with capmaking, and therefore have a couple of caps in their portfolio. However, when looking at the process and methods used to making those pieces, I get the feeling inside of not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Not meant in a taunting way, but the workarounds when making those, de facto beautiful and admirable headpieces, just have so much of a DIY (Do-it-yourself) feeling to them. Which in the end proves that humans – and hatters in particular – are very creative and skilled people, able to work out finished goods in areas that detours their original craft.

My perspective

I always try to spread knowledge of the working methods I experienced through my apprenticeship at the small batch manufacturing workshop in Germany where Herr Bullmann taught me cap making. In doing so, most members of the hatmaker-group who discover these insights, explain some of the frustration experienced in the cumbersome process they went through when making caps. Sharing this knowledge about an old craft like capmaking keeps the craft alive and maintains a specific know-how from getting lost in history. Simultaneously, I believe there could be a lot more capmakers up and running, and if you´re eager to learn an old craft, then let me know prompt! I might consider getting an apprentice myself. When thinking about my masters’ stern speech about capmakers vs. hatmakers I can extract one essential overall message, which is:
Good capmakers are awesome. Let us be more!

After 7 years as a capmaker and entrepreneur, I unfortunately have to say no. There is nothing in this world that sells itself.
The company’s growth strategy

With the workshop on Bornholm, we are now able to produce our own caps locally, but production and sales must go hand in hand. Therefore, our strategy is that with the past year’s main focus on production, next year’s most important activity will be concentrated on sales. In relation to Bornholm, the goal for 2019 is to produce 800 caps and hats. Compared to 2018, where we have produced and sold approx. 200 pieces, this is four times the amount. We believe this is a realistic goal and look forward to getting started.

Sale of caps from Denmark

How can you help support good craftsmanship, Danish production and high quality? With three new initiatives, we will disseminate Danish-produced headgear:

New collaborations – We are looking for companies with distribution and sales networks in Denmark who want to cooperate.

We are planning a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter. In this regard, we are extremely excited for everyone who wants to share the campaign. This is an important prerequisite for online success.

We will open a new sales point on Bornholm near the production, where individual orders can also be processed. The plan is for it to be open during the summer season, but terms and opening hours have not yet been decided.

Why capmaking is important right now?

The fact is that hatshops businesses are very old school, and capmaking has not been developed very thoroughly in the past decades. In fact quality and innovation decreased. It’s yet another story about how honor full craftsmanship got run over by mass-production and anonymous products.

An example of this can be seen in the decrease of sizes. Where the majority of caps today are made in one-size, where in fact peoples heads comes in 10-12 sizes, and have different shapes just like peoples feet. However, you would never see the shoe industry adopt a one-size shoe would you? That just does not make any sense. Nevertheless, that has been one of the results of mass-production mindset in the headwear industry.

Wilgart has sold more than 600 caps during the past couple of years, of which many where made-to-order. We are a unique company, on an amazing journey, and if you want to become part of this engine, please send me a resume, or meet me directly in my shop in Copenhagen.

We expect this years turnover to be around 400.000 DKK. Next year we want to produce and sell 600-800 pieces of headwear, and raise our turnover to 800.000 followed by continues growth. Last year we received a funding from EU to build our own small batch cap factory on Bornholm, which will ensure a higher volume of unique caps. If you put in sweat and tears to reach that goal, then we would like to offer you a share of the company.

Recently Wilgart has been looking into very old time classics of caps. One of the styles that came to mind was the very broad cloth caps, worn by men in the 1910s through the 1930s. Amongst the styles popular at the time was the newsboy cap, baker cap and golf caps. One shape in particular caught attention, is the beautifully crafted one piece crown caps, that seems a very popular style in the early days.

The nature of fashion and shifting trends have left the broad and voluminous cloth caps behind, and over the decades, the baseball cap has become the contemporary modern choice of headwear, for a majority of booth men and women. A development that Mr. Lo Bue obviously don’t appreciate. Moreover, he has got an excellent point about the stylish look of the period. We absolutely agree here at Wilgart, where we do love the bespoke and handcrafted styles. Where we celebrate diversity, uniqueness and history of caps!

The notably honest truth about the capmaking industry is that it’s been going downhill for booth quality and style ever since. Sizes have vanished, durability is at the bottom of the ocean, and people just go with it. Or most people does. But not Monsavais of California, who has been challenging the independent capmaking industry with success since 2014, and of whom I admire the fabulous styles and attention to production details and materials. These folks truly are keeping the craft of capmaking alive and true to tradition.

“All men of trades owned one, from the farmers to the Prince of Wales. Mostly made in wool and lined with silk. Today’s modern caps are nothing like they made in the 1920s and 1930s.” Monsavais, LA

Our own cut for the “One piece crown” is developed on a pattern I got from my master Herr Bullmann last year. He had been making the pattern long time ago, but did not have the much success with the style.

The pictures above are from the first prototypes, and are the first time Wilgart is cutting with scissors over that pretty shape. We are still working hard to complete the look and shape of the perfect one piece crown, in the way we think it should look. Developing the pattern for a new style is a process that usually takes several months, and we still need to make the hatblocks for each size, and find us a slightly larger brim than these forecasts. Stay put, the ‘new old caps’ are under construction.

The project

Imagine taking a ferry trip, driving into a forest, and on the end of a long tortuous bumpy road, ending up at the last capmaker in Denmark’s production facility! The place where my farther is running a local fruits exclusive juice press, will in 2018 also be housing a sewing workshop with the needed industrial sewing machines and wooden hat blocks to create handmade headwear. This workshop will be an extension of the capacity means of production that Wilgart prevail. Which means so far, there will be no change to the selling and sewing workshop in Copenhagen North West that has been the Wilgart base since 2013. The help and funding from LAG Bornholm makes the step towards a more efficient small batch cap-production in Denmark a reality. The project starts out in October this year, with me and my dad refurbishing the rooms, and the project period ends in Martz 2018 where sewing machines, hat blocks, steam iron and fabrics should be ready to cut. Follow the adventure on site, or online.

The psychologic factor in company processing

As an entrepreneur, you get to deal with tasks of tremendous variation. As for myself, the only capmaker in Scandinavia and simultaneously the only person in Wilgart, the variation stretches from handcraft to mental gymnastics. With the left hand, I have to excel a highly specialized craftsmanship and with the right mind, I have to persuade doubts into belief that decisions done in my company, are the right once to put into practice. As proprietor of a bold mind, (everybody has their own twisted version installed) is the latter challenge without comparison most provocative. Some days it seems hopeless, and the development of Wilgart feels counter-progressing and motivation hits rock-bottom. In other moments, my company is flying over the hills and the dream of a fortunate future appears as carved in stone. Somewhere in between are all the hard days of work, where tasks are completed one by one. Surprising and enjoyable customer visits, repair of sewing machines, ordering vegetable tanned leather from Germany, talking to master Herr Bullmann in Bullani Mützen, forecasting budget calculations and making caps from scratch. Loop these activities, and imagine yourself as a capmaker in a workshop like mine? Where would you go next? What would be your next move? At Wilgart we are moving part of the production deep into the forest of cliff island, Bornholm!
