\nThe 1960s saw a radical change in Western culture. All the old things had to go, and the otherwise well-established and widespread use of headgear was now dated and old-fashioned. The magnificent extra wide sixpences and heavy woolly eightpieces disappeared. Even the filthat was ousted and many of the hatters and capmakers of the time had to go out of business. Generations of experience in the profession were lost. But not all headgear lost its relevance. It was during these years that the baseball cap became widespread. There was a craving for American middle-class culture, and an idolization of American sports and movie stars, several of whom embraced the baseball cap.
